Crossword Genius

Humiliation, lacking a cellar (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

basement

'cellar' is the definition.
(both can mean the space underneath a house)

'humiliation lacking a' is the wordplay.
'humiliation' becomes 'abasement' (abasement is a kind of humiliation).
'lacking' indicates named letters should be taken away.
'abasement' with 'a' taken out is 'BASEMENT'.

(Other definitions for basement that I've seen before include "room's full!" , "Part of house below ground" , "Lowest floor of a building" , "Underground room" , "Underground area of building" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
