Crossword Genius

I said, ‘Allow us to make some small holes’ (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eyelets

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'some small holes' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'i said allow us' is the wordplay.
'said' shows a homophone (sound like).
'allow us' becomes 'lets' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'i' sounds like 'eye'.
'eye'+'lets'='EYELETS'

'to make' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eyelets that I've seen before include "Rings for reinforcement" , "peep-holes" , "Small holes" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
