Crossword Genius

Laconic, add salt when it's not raining (3,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dry season

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'laconic add' is the definition.
I can't judge whether this definition defines the answer.

'salt when it's not raining' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'salt' could be 'season' (I've seen this before) and 'season' is located in the answer.
'not raining' could be 'dry' and 'dry' is present in the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for dry season that I've seen is " Any dosser (anag) - no rains at this time".)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
