Crossword Genius

Liberal upset, say, with party meeting-place (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

lodge

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'place' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'liberal upset say with party' is the wordplay.
'liberal' becomes 'l' (abbreviation).
'upset' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'say' becomes 'eg' (short for 'exempli gratia', 'for example' in Latin).
'with' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'party' becomes 'do' (do is a kind of party).
'eg'+'do'='egdo'
'egdo' back-to-front is 'odge'.
'l'+'odge'='LODGE'

'meeting' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. It may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for lodge that I've seen before include "Cottage at the entrance to the grounds of a big house" , "next door to Mansion House?" , "Deposit for gatekeeper's cottage" , "Deposit in bank, or beaver's lair" , "Deposit as to bank account" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
