Crossword Genius

Male, no dove, carrying a weapon (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tomahawk

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'weapon' is the definition.
(tomahawk is a kind of weapon)

'male no dove carrying a' is the wordplay.
'male' becomes 'tom' (I've seen this before).
'no dove' becomes 'hawk' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'carrying' says to put letters next to each other.
'hawk' after 'a' is 'ahawk'.
'tom'+'ahawk'='TOMAHAWK'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tomahawk that I've seen before include "War hatchet once wielded by native Americans" , "US native axe" , "Axe as weapon" , "North American Indian hatchet" , "its strike can be fatal" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
