Crossword Genius

Naked models cavorting in the dunes (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nudes

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the dunes' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'naked models cavorting in' is the wordplay.
'naked' says to take the centre.
'models' becomes 'pinups' (pin-up is a kind of model).
'cavorting in' becomes 'des' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
The middle of 'pinups' is 'nu'.
'nu'+'des'='NUDES'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for nudes that I've seen before include "Unclothed people" , "Naked figures in paintings" , "Dunes (anag.)" , "Revealing paintings?" , "page-three features?" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
