Crossword Genius

Newtlike creature? Reportedly cull many on lake (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

axolotl

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'lake' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'newtlike creature? reportedly cull many' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'many' could be 'lot' (a lot of something) and 'lot' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'on' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for axolotl that I've seen before include "Mexican native" , "Type of salamander" , "Mexican salamander - allot ox (anag)" , "Central American salamander - lax tool (anag)" , "amphibian" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
