Crossword Genius

Opposed to profit in a way (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

against

'opposed to' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'profit in a way' is the wordplay.
'profit' becomes 'gain' (synonyms).
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'way' becomes 'st' (abbreviation for street).
'a'+'st'='ast'
'gain' placed into 'ast' is 'AGAINST'.

(Other definitions for against that I've seen before include "antagonistic" , "Versus - in contact with" , "Not supporting" , "Facing" , "Opposite to" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail and The Guardian.
