Crossword Genius

Perhaps unfurled foliage drops (6,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

leaves out

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'drops' is the definition.
('leave out' can be a synonym of 'drop')

'perhaps unfurled foliage' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'foliage' could be 'leaves' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'leaves' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'out' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for leaves out that I've seen before include "evidence that spring has arrived?" , "Excludes" , "Overlooks" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
