Crossword Genius

Pot knocked over — family needs serviette (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

napkin

'serviette' is the definition.
(I know that serviette can be written as napkin)

'pot knocked over family' is the wordplay.
'pot' becomes 'pan' (I've seen this before).
'knocked over' says the letters should be written backwards.
'family' becomes 'kin' (synonyms).
'pan' written backwards gives 'nap'.
'nap'+'kin'='NAPKIN'

'needs' is the link.

(Other definitions for napkin that I've seen before include "Diner's cloth" , "Cloth rectangle worn at mealtime" , "piece of material giving consumer protection" , "Cloth used at mealtime" , "Cloth square used to protect clothing while eating" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
