Crossword Genius

Say Dorothy's sent back dull and heavy food (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stodge

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'heavy food' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'say dorothy's sent back' is the wordplay.
'say' becomes 'eg' (both can mean for example).
'dorothy's' becomes 'dot's' (short for Dorothy).
'sent back' says the letters should be written backwards.
'eg'+'dots'='egdots'
'egdots' in reverse letter order is 'STODGE'.

'dull and' is the link.
This may not be right. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stodge that I've seen before include "Heavy and indigestible food" , "Heavy pud" , "Heavy, often starchy, food" , "Heavy, uninteresting food" , "Heavy solid food" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
