Crossword Genius

Say spots come up with starchy food (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stodge

'starchy food' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'say spots come up' is the wordplay.
'say' becomes 'eg' (both can mean 'for example').
'spots' becomes 'dots' (I have seen 'Tiny spots ' mean 'dots' so perhaps 'spots' could also mean 'dots').
'come up' says the letters should be written backwards.
'eg'+'dots'='egdots'
'egdots' in reverse letter order is 'STODGE'.

'with' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for stodge that I've seen before include "Heavy and indigestible food" , "Steamed pudding" , "Heavy stuff" , "Heavy pud" , "'Heavy, starchy food (6)'" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
