Sort of bread that makes a dinner complete? (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

wholemeal

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sort of bread' is the definition.
'wholemeal' can be an answer for 'bread' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'sort of' bit.

'a dinner complete?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'a' is found in the answer.
'complete?' could be 'whole' ('whole' is associated in meaning with 'complete') and 'whole' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'mel' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'that makes' is the link.

(Other definitions for wholemeal that I've seen before include "kind of bread" , "Like bread" , "Type of flour" , "it's so healthy" , "Type of bread" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
