'sheared' can be an answer for 'cut' (shear can mean to cut). I am not sure about the 'off' bit.
'split having energy' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'energy' could be 'e' (physics symbol as in E=mc2) and 'e' is located in the answer.
'split' could be 'shared' (split can mean shared out) and 'shared' is located in the leftover letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
