Suspicious as a bass? (5)
I believe the answer is:
fishy
'suspicious' is the definition.
(I know that suspicious can be written as fishy)
'a bass?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'bass?' could be 'fish' (bass is a kind of fish) and 'fish' is present in the answer.
A single letter 'y' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
'as' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for fishy that I've seen before include "Ray is so" , "Suspect" , "Arousing suspicion" , "Suspicious in piscine way" , "Dodgy, suspicious" .)
