Crossword Genius

Two of a kind peel off, say (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pair

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'two of a kind' is the first definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'peel off say' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pair that I've seen before include "Duo" , "Husband and wife" , "Twins" , "Two of a similar type" , "Twosome" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
