Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

I cannot really see how this works, but
'letters?' could be 'mail' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'mail' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'er' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
