I believe the answer is:

filled the bill

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'adequate' is the definition.
I know nothing about this answer so I can't tell whether it can be defined by this definition.

'what the toucan did' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found in the answer.
'did' could be 'led' (leading is a kind of doing) and 'led' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'was' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for filled the bill that I've seen before include "Suited a particular purpose" , "Served - performed adequately" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
