Crossword Genius

What was in the beginning? Scope for wit (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

wordplay

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'for wit' is the definition.
(wordplay is a kind of wit)

'what was in the beginning? scope' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'beginning?' could be 'ord' (I've seen this before) and 'ord' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for wordplay that I've seen before include "Punning" , "pun?" , "Making puns" , "verbal shenanigans" , "Puns etc" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
