Crossword Genius

Where to leave the car keys and change gear (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

garage

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'where to leave' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'car keys and change gear' is the wordplay.
'car keys' becomes 'ga' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'change' indicates anagramming the letters.
'gear' with letters rearranged gives 'rage'.
'ga'+'rage'='GARAGE'

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for garage that I've seen before include "Building for vehicle" , "Building for housing or repairing car" , "Observation" , "Petrol seller; modern music style" , "Car port" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
