I believe the answer is:
slogs
'works hard' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with contact as well as being verbs in their -s form.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?
'firewood by september 1st' is the wordplay.
'firewood' becomes 'logs' (I've seen this in another clue).
'by' says to put letters next to each other.
'september 1st' becomes 's' (1st letter of 'september').
'logs' put after 's' is 'SLOGS'.
