Continued to put money into the plant (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

resumed

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'continued' is the definition.
(resuming is a kind of continuing)

'money into the plant' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'money' could be 'sum' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'sum' is found in the answer.
'plant' could be 'reed' (reed is a kind of plant) and 'reed' is found within the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to put' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for resumed that I've seen before include "Began again" , "got to work on again" , "came into play again" , "Restarted" , "Recommenced" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
