Crossword Genius

The whole animal (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hog

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'the whole' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'animal' is the second definition.
(hog is a kind of animal)

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hog that I've seen before include "Pig, who holds the road perhaps" , "Take more than one's share" , "source of meat" , "A male pig or a greedy person" , "Monopolise" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
