Crossword Genius

Craftsman puts single mother and boy on the street (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stonemason

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'craftsman' is the definition.
(I know that stonemason is a type of construction worker)

'single mother and boy on the street' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'single' could be 'one' (a single thing - only one) and 'one' is present in the answer.
'mother' could be 'ma' (ma can mean mother) and 'ma' is present in the answer.
'and' could be 'n' (common abbreviation for 'and') and 'n' is found in the answer.
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'puts' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stonemason that I've seen before include "Craftsperson" , "Chiseller" , "One working with, eg, granite" , "Rock craftsman" , "Building worker" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
